For those unaware, in each level of Minecraft Dungeons there are a certain number of chests and secrets. Chests simply refer to the ones found in plain sight on the map, and usually grant equipment, emeralds, or consumables. Secrets, on the other hand, are hidden chests which take a little more effort to find.

For the most part, there are three main types of secrets, but there may well be more that players discover whilst running through the game multiple times. These secrets can be both hard to find and difficult to obtain even after finding them, but reward the player with extra loot.

The first and most common type of secret is the invisible chest. These are chests just like any other except they do not appear on the map and they will be completely invisible until the player walks close to them. These chests always appear as the more potent red variant of chest and do not count towards the number of chests on the map. Finding these is time consuming, as the player must not only fill out the map but also step in nearly every part of it. For the most part, these are usually off the beaten path and in tight spaces. Anywhere that looks kind of odd on the map is a good candidate for an invisible chest.

Next, some secrets come in the form of events. A player may find a spire which summons waves of enemies that must be defeated, or have to solve a puzzle. Upon clearing the event, the secret will be unlocked, usually resulting in a chest (which like before doesn’t count as the chests on the map). Finally, some secrets take the form of hidden areas, one of which is even used to unlock Minecraft Dungeons’ secret level. These typically require the player to keep an eye out for levers or pressure plates, but are very uncommon.

It is worth noting that, although secret chests are always the better variety of chest, it often isn’t worth combing every bit of land in search of them. Minecraft Dungeons scales difficulty for the player’s power rating, so it will be much faster to simply gain power by grabbing the regular, easy to find chests in the next area than spending a ton of time searching for secrets.

Minecraft Dungeons is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
